Disappointing Discoveries

It’s time I start switching things up a little one here and one thing I learnt from my recent survey (thankyou to anyone who filled that in!) is that people want to see more disappointments, reviews more in depth, stand alone reviews and to see more ‘well used’ makeup. So we are ticking one of those things off in todays post and I’m going to be sharing with you some disappointing discoveries because hey, we can’t love everything can we?!

Colourpop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks | I just for the life of me cannot fathom how this formula can work for anyone! They are incredibly uncomfortable which I was disappointed about. Soon as I applied this to my lips and it began drying as normal it was just pulling every bit of moisture out and my lips felt so dry. Not to mention that if I smiled, spoke, drank, ate or moved my lips in the slightest this would just crack and look crazy. I haven’t yet been able to apply this and get to my front door to leave the house before it looks a mess! For reference the shades I have are: Midi, Beeper, Viper and Wild Nothing.

Nyx Lingerie Liquid Lipsticks | For the same reason as the Colourpop ones, these are so uncomfortable on the lips! Like it feels like you have something sat on your lips and they crack and it’s not even remotely attractive! I thought my lips might be a tag too dry so I have tried to apply these after using a lip scrub too and it’s equally as terrible! These are a no go for me but I have heard that the NYX Suede liquid lipsticks are far better. Shades I have are: Embellishment & Honeymoon.

Toofaced Shadow Insurance | I just feel like this is oil in a tube! It’s weird and really doesn’t work on my eyes! I swear by the Mac Paintpot in Soft Ochre and have used it for years now but I wanted to try a variation of new ones and this was so raved about yet I just cannot see why! It just makes me eyelids feel really wet and greasy and if anything moves the shadow around on them!

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush | Diffused Heat | Oooooooh maybe a controversial one here given how much everyone adores these blushes. Now, had this have cost me around £10 this would be fine however I cannot even remotely justify the bloody price of this thing for what it is. Sure, it’s gorgeous, it’s beautiful and the packaging makes my heart beat faster but what good is that when the colour payoff isn’t anything that special? It gives colour payoff but not enough to justify the shocking price tag of these! Maybe it’s too close to my natural skin/blushing colour? I’m not sure because it does swatch relatively well (still not well enough for the price!!) but it just falls a little flat when applied to my face!

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick | Lolita | Everyone seems to adore this and it seems to be me that only has the issue with this products but seriously, it stresses me out how this doesn’t work for me! It’s the perfect colour and the kind of colour I’d wear every single day yet I apply this and by the time I’m in the car on the way to work all I’m left with is a brown nude line around my lips! It’s really frustrating because everyone else says it doesn’t budge on them!

Freedom Duo Brow Powder | Dark Brown |  So this is only a semi disappointment because the darker shade in this is great for my brows and it doesn’t cause me any problems. However, the lightest shade is so unusable that there is just the point in it! It’s barely pigmented for starters but when you do finally pick up product it’s so ashy that it turns my brows a dark greyish tone. It aint’ cute!

Milani Conceal + Perfect Foundation + Concealer | Now, now Milani! Why’d you got to go and let me down huh? If you follow me on Instagram you’ll know just how much I adore Milani and post it on my feed so I thought I’d try myself a base product. I got the shade 01 creamy vanilla and oh my goodness it’s dark! Seriously, if your skin is anything as light as mine (usually the lightest in all foundations or mac NW10 for reference) you probably won’t get on with this! It’s just too yellow and way too dark! It’s a shame because I love the formula of this and the coverage but c’mon Milani, get better at your shades ok?!

Makeup Revolution Ultra Brow Arch & Shape | I’ve had this for around a week now and it’s a double sided brow product. You might be thinking ‘well you can’t hate something after having it a week’ ooooooh yes I can! One side of this is a crayon style tool where you draw it onto your brows. It’s a little too thick if I’m totally honest but it’s workable. What I can’t understand is the felt tip end which is supposed to give you super natural ombre/faded brows yet this is so weird! Obviously, with colours a ‘brown’ isn’t just a brown there will be reds in there etc. This pen draws brown and then splodges of red and it’s not at all pretty!

Rimmel Wonder’full Mascara | I liked the sound of this because it’s got Argan Oil in there. Issue with this is actually getting the bloody product on my lashes! It feels pretty much empty and it gives my lashes the lightest coat of mascara and I feel for me to get the lashes I want I’d have to give this thing a round of 20 layers to get anywhere near! The brush applicator thing is really clunky and it’s a bit of a disaster for me!

Milani Illuminating Face Powder | Beautys Touch | This thing is beautiful, almost too beautiful to use but I really just don’t understand the point of it. It’s called a face powder but…there is just too much pink so it kind of borderlines a blush but then it’s too highlighting! You could use it as a highlighter but it’s not really glowy enough and again, a lot of pink. I will still get my use out of this….as a blog prop which is a bit ridiculous ha! I feel like it’s a really good idea but not a lot of thought went into the practicality or the usage of this product.

That’s everything for my disappointing discoveries! Let me know if you’d like a post about my skincare disappointments! Also, leave a comment below with what product has disappointed you the most recently.

Sometimes it shows that the most expensive and popular brands aren’t always the best, they are hyped up and not worth the cash. Really liked this post 🙂

Oooh I have to disagree with you about the Hourglass blush! I LOVE them! But I don’t have that shade so maybe that’s why! I’ve always been curious about Too Faced shadow insurance too but I guess I’ll be giving it a miss now! xx

I wish I could love the Hourglass blushes and I love the colour, I love the packaging but wtf in this world makes them worth that kind of money?!! hahahaha

One thing I cannot get on with is Rimmel’s mascaras. I don’t know why but they always make my lashes soo clumpy, and they smudge so easily!! I don’t understand the Makeup Revolution brow pencil because of the felt pen side and that’s why I’ve never tried it! xx

It’s a shame because it could have been really good but the pigments have obviously separated and gone funny! annoyingggg

I have that makeup revolution brown pen/pencil and I know people use the felt tip side as an eyeliner pen

I find the same problem with my KVD Bow N Arrow lipstick! But I love colourpop utra mattes, tbh nothing is too dry for my lips haha!

I can’t believe you put an Hourglass blush in here … we can no longer be friends 😉 I get what you mean though, there are some amazing drugstore ones now xx

Yesssssss! I love it and the colour BUT WHY THE HIGH PRICE TAG! I have better drugstore blushes to be honest I think it’s just the price point of them for me!

Agree about the two-faced shadow insurance. It separates and feels oily on my lids.

I’ve always been intrigued by the Hourglass blushes and it’s so interesting to hear your thoughts on them. Instead of using the duo powder by Freedom, depending on whether you like pomades of not, maybe try your shade in the pomade? Please do a disappointing skincare products post!!

Oooooooh I love when people suggest posts to me and this actually sounds right up my street because I have a fair few things I don’t get on with at all! I’ll pop this on my list of posts to get up!

  8. 07/08/2017 / 12:27 pm

The NYX Lingerie liquid lipsticks also don’t work for me. I have one shade and I try so hard to use it because I love the color but it doesn’t last on the lips, cracks and the color don’t apply evenly 🙁

I also couldn’t get on with the Lip Lingeries – I had shade Lace Trim which was so nice but it looked disgusting on! I don’t understand how people don’t think it’s drying. Interesting about the Milani foundation too, I’ll bear that in mind if I ever get round to trying it xx

Yessss 100% swatch before you buy or bear in mind, they are rather dark!! I agree, they are so bloody drying!

Oooh I’ve been meaning to try Colorpop, maybe I’ll stay clear of the matte liquid lipsticks. I felt the same about the wonder’full mascara, it does give a very light natural finish.

The freedom brow pomade is rubbish but try the revolution one! It is SO SO SO much better! I wrote a post on it if you want an in depth review. But I highly highly recommend it! Also, I have the Kat Von D lipstick too but just find it too drying???
